My sophomore year, I took a speech class with Ms. Wiese. I think it was the best decision I made that year. I learned so much about myself and others because of that class, and I became so much more confident and compassionate by expressing myself and hearing about who others really are. It helped me so much to relate to others as human beings, to see what they wanted to present to everyone. Anyway, here’s what I want to present to the world. It’s a speech I wrote about the song “Kick Ass” by Mika. And it’s Me.
“There’s this thing called peace. From people, from society, from your own thoughts. It’s not just some freaky hippie-Buddhist-Quaker pacifism. It’s just the difference between living and living. It’s like Middle-Earth without Sauron. And better yet, it exists.
There’s this song I know. It’s called “Kick Ass,” by this guy called Mika.
It’s about not caring what other people think or say, ‘cause they don’t know what they’re talking about. It’s about finding peace in your own head, ‘cause that’s what makes just existing bearable. And after you have peace in your own head, you can be weird and do whatever. ‘Cause normal people are boring, and stuff normal people like is boring. But being weird is fun, you know? Stuff like singing “Never Gonna Give You Up” while in a tree. Or climbing walls while belting out “I Want It That Way.” Or quantum theory. And making people lose the game.
It’s about living it up, caring about the little things that matter. Staying young. Not limiting yourself to whatever personality trait you think describes you, ‘cause people metaphorically shape-shift all the time, so life isn’t a book or movie where everyone is evil or good, cold or caring, ordinary or extraordinary. People…everything, really, just is.
So as for me, I’m just doing whatever seems right, whatever keeps the peace and freedom. And whether that’s by staying idealistic, reading comics, listening, or making cookies, it doesn’t really matter.
I guess all I’m saying is…just be. Unless you’re a jerk, but I’m sure none of you are.
So just be.”
